Redesign and Delivery of Freight Driver Training – Transnet Freight, South Africa

Transnet Freight commissioned TMA-Global to completely overhaul its outdated freight driver training programme, which was taking too long to produce qualified drivers.

TMA developed a learner-centred, end-to-end training solution that included:
 

• Reviewing all operational and technical materials

• Designing a modern, learner-led theoretical and practical training programme

• Hosting and delivering theoretical training for 53 Transnet trainees in Melbourne, Australia

• Developing trainee logbooks, practical on-job training, and tailored assessment tools

• Creating and delivering a customised Train-the-Trainer course for Transnet’s instructors in South Africa

• Project managing the rollout of the on-job training programme across key depots in Johannesburg, Ladysmith, and Durban

• Providing ongoing support to Transnet’s Training Manager, Supervisors, and On-Job Trainers

The new programme gave trainees ownership of their learning, driving stronger knowledge retention and faster skill development. As a result, all trainees qualified in half the time compared to the previous system. TMA’s innovative approach was integral to Transnet’s broader culture change programme, setting a new standard for driver training excellence.
